The “Kunchanada” Media Competition, held annually and organized by the Maliyadeva Media Unit, is one of the biggest school media competitions in Sri Lanka. This prestigious event first started in the year 2000, establishing itself as one of the leading competitions in the country's school media landscape. Notably, Maliyadeva Media Unit organized the first online media competition, “Kunchanada’ 20", showcasing their commitment to innovation and adaptation to changing times. This competition has managed to draw participation from schools nationwide, providing a platform for students to enhance and showcase their media skills.

The Maliyadeva Media Unit collaborates with several esteemed organizations, including the Department of Government Information, the Ministry of Mass Media, Japura Voice, and school media club, to ensure the competition's success and to provide students with the best possible resources and opportunities.

The Kunchanada ’25 All-Island Interschool Media Competition, one of the flagship annual events of the Media Unit, was successfully held on 15 June 2025. This year’s competition achieved remarkable participation, bringing together over 200 schools and more than 2,000 contestants from various regions of Sri Lanka. Upholding its commitment to inclusivity, the event was conducted trilingually in Sinhala, English, and Tamil, enabling students from all linguistic backgrounds to engage meaningfully.

The theme for Kunchanada ’25 was “Traditional Sri Lanka”, which was reflected across various segments of the programme. Participants were encouraged to incorporate elements of Sri Lanka’s heritage, culture, and identity into their submissions, adding a distinctive and culturally rich dimension to the competition.

A comprehensive range of categories was offered, covering key areas of the media field. These included Announcing, News Editing, Sports Commentary, Dubbing, Photography, Media Technical Skills, Graphic Designing, and Video Editing. While most events were conducted through the traditional, in-person competition format, the Graphic Designing and Video Editing categories were held online, allowing contestants to demonstrate their digital media talents through remote submissions.

Registrations commenced promptly at 7.00 a.m., and the day unfolded with a carefully coordinated schedule of events. The organising committee worked efficiently to manage the large number of participants and maintain the flow of activities. Although a few minor operational issues were encountered, they were promptly addressed, ensuring that the overall conduct of the competition remained smooth and uninterrupted.

The event concluded at 6.30 p.m., marking the end of a vibrant day that showcased the creativity, technical proficiency, and passion of young media enthusiasts from across the island. Kunchanada ’25 once again demonstrated the Media Unit’s ability to coordinate and execute a large-scale national competition with professionalism and dedication.
